It is the aim of this book to further a greater understanding of the crises which perennially wrack the Middle East by setting out, in plain terms, the background to those events. At moments of crisis the press and the media lack the time to give enough in-depth information to make them fully comprehensible, let alone enable the viewer or reader to place them in their proper historical and political context. It is hoped that this book will go some way to fill such a gap. It is intended for the general reader, not for the specialist. It does not presume to suggest solutions to contemporary problems; rather it seeks to provide the reader with the tools to approach them with fresh insight and to enhance his understanding of future events as and when they occur.
